Brief: two weeks ago, I was in NingXia province and invited to join a CSR training and seminar, one of which was designed for NGOs. I learned some stories from the participating NGOs and then pointed out three types of NGO errors. All these types of NGO should be reformed.
Error Type-1. Good talking, poor enforcement.
NGOs of this type usually have nice business card and organization brochure. They frequently participate in high level conference and gala dinner and tell story. They are good at money raising, but cannot make things happen because they do not have the people to operate in reality.
Error Type-2. Good quality, poor PR(public relationship).
People who run this type of NGO are very nice and hardworking. They actually have done a lot to help the poor, to support sustainable development, etc. You would really be moved if you carefully and patiently listen to their stories. However, they are very poor in PR things and do not know how to advertise their work and build up reputation widely. Therefore, the donors do not know them and are not able to finance them.
Error Type-3. Abundant resources, poor management.
These NGOs have good people and do good job. Money comes in to support their work. However, years pass, they are still struggling at the grassroot level. Why? because they are very poor in terms of management skills. They would spend 1 million RMB on a production project, but will not spend 10 thousand RMB to hire a good project coordinator...
